Four in at 69 post early lead at Helfrich

Four players, which include defending champion Logan Osborne, shot a 2-under par 69 to take the early lead in the 85th annual Evansville Courier & Press Men’s City Golf Tournament.

Phillip Riggs set the early pace when he was the long-time leader in the clubhouse after going 2-under on the front nine and even on the back for 69.

Then Riggs had a lot of company, all at once, when Osborne’s group of recent Indiana University graduate David Mills, the 2011 champion, and top junior Dylan Meyer, who will attend Illinois in the fall, all finished 2-under.

Current University of Evansville standout Alex Turner is alone in fifth at 1-under par 70.

Osborne got to 4-under par two different times in his round, once on each nine, but had two double bogeys on the back nine at Nos. 10 and 17 when he got above the hole and paid dearly for it.

“I caught a bad break when I hit the cart path at 10,” said Osborne. “Then I just a bad putt on 17.”

Mills and Meyer both got to 3-under before late bogeys cost them a chance at the outright lead.

“I putted well,” said Meyer. “I just couldn’t get any of them to fall.”
